Soon after arriving at The Pines, Marion and Rodney asked me if I wanted to take part in a bit of spotlighting they were planning to do on Wednesday night. The idea was to go out at night in a ute with a spotlight and rifle and try and shoot as many rabbits as possible in an attempt to reduce their numbers and help protect the emerging wheat crop.
I hadn't used a firearm since high school (and only ever shot at inanimate objects), but in the spirit of accepting all offers and adapting to life on the farm I decided to give it a go.
I soon discovered that my high-school training had not prepared me for a live bunny shoot, and although I succeeded in dispatching three of our quarry, my aim was such that all three didn't die as quickly as I'd hoped.
By the end of the night we had collected 13 rabbits, which meant Marion had plenty to choose from to make up a batch of her famous rabbit stew.
I hoped that the audience who arrived on Friday evening for the Twig would be game enough to give it a go!
