'Cow' and 'sheep' hiding in the scrub.
As soon as I arrived at The Pines, Rodney and Marion Caccianiga's wheat farm near Manangatang, I was handed a cup of tea before setting off on an extensive tour of their property. Rodney grew up in this part of the world and has spent his whole life working on the land. While Marion, who was born in Holland, grew up in Perth before marrying Rodney and moving to the area to raise a family.
Recent rains meant that this year's wheat crop had germinated and was beginning to thrive. As we drove from paddock to paddock, checking out abandoned properties and examining rusting car bodies, we came across a famous duo (a single cow and sheep) who roam about the place un hindered by fences; runaways from another farm perhaps.
Rodney caught sight of 'cow' and 'sheep' through the thick mallee scrub that bordered one of his many wheat fields. As we approached the pair made a run for it across the open paddock. Both animals appeared to be in exceptional health. Clearly they were upset by our presence and preferred their quiet, unmolested life in the back-blocks.
